James Morrison Academy of Music

The James Morrison Academy of Music @ UniSA is a music school in partnership with the University of South Australia. Students are enrolled as full registered students of UniSA but attend classes at the James Morrison Academy facility in Mt Gambier. The campus is situated in the 'Old Town Hall' in Mt Gambier right in the heart of the city.

Possibly the greatest line-up of jazz players and educators ever assembled in Australia, our lecturers have been sourced from around the world.

The James Morrison Academy of Music offers unique experiences to aspiring musicians where they can work with some of the finest jazz educators in the world. This is performance based education at its best, where students don't just learn about music - they learn how to make music.

At the JMA we understand that jazz is a performing art of the most personal kind, yet with deep traditions and a multitude of skills required to reach one's potential.

Our focus is on demonstrable results and we have developed a concept for learning that concentrates on the experience of the musician, rather that the more traditional concept of theory based learning.

This is not to say that theory is ignored but that it is used to explain the experience rather than to lead on to it - an important distinction that changes the game for music education.

The James Morrison Academy of Music is creating a vibrant, energetic learning environment with students reaching their full potential in an atmosphere where both discipline and discovery go hand in hand.
